Now I know that everyone has been following this with bated breath, but just in case you weren't aware, I'll put it out there.
Turns out that the rotarix vaccine manufactured by glaxosmithkline was found to contain DNA from porcine circovirus (PCV1). This orally administered vaccine licensed in 2008 has been put on hold in the US. Rotavirus, a diarrheal disease, was linked to over 50,000 hospitalizations in the US each year.
Funny fact though: PCV1 has not been shown to cause any disease in humans. It's found in lots of meat and food products in the US and does not multiply in human hosts. Where is it from then? Rotarix is a vaccine manufactured in cells, not in eggs like the flu vaccine. From the very inception of the process, PCV1 was found in the cell lines.
WHO has not recommended that international vaccine efforts be halted since the reduction of disease is far greater than the risk of the PCV1 contamination.
Thoughts?
